Challenging and true. Reminds me of something you said in conversation at an intensive:

"It's hard to preach a compelling Christ if you're not compelled by Christ."

I'm convinced the 'best' sermons I've preached and the most effective conversations I've had with people have been primarily a result of being captivated myself by Jesus.

I like what your are saying here. There is more to be said, however, that the transfer of witness and the power of God to be seen is greater than what we reflect only. Isn't the mystery of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit's work in God's sovereignty an important truth. He is before and after, above and below what I do, Which is an important foundation to what you are saying.Thanks for the thoughts.

Ouch! This was a painful 2X4 to the side of the head! (Or more accurately, to the heart!) Your post is so right on target. We see Christ's loveliness so clearly in how He has revealed Himself in the Bible. This post reminded me of an old hymn penned by Fredrick Whitfield in the late 1800's. It so well describes the beauty of Christ that draws us to Him and causes our hearts to love Him every more deeply.

There is a Name I love to hear,
I love to sing its worth;
It sounds like music in my ear,
The sweetest Name on earth.

Refrain:
Oh, how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus,
Because He first loved me!

It tells me of a Savior’s love,
Who died to set me free;
It tells me of His precious blood,
The sinner’s perfect plea.

It tells me of a Father’s smile
Beaming upon His child;
It cheers me through this little while,
Through desert, waste, and wild.

It tells me what my Father hath
In store for every day,
And though I tread a darksome path,
Yields sunshine all the way.

It tells of One whose loving heart
Can feel my deepest woe;
Who in each sorrow bears a part
That none can bear below.

It bids my trembling heart rejoice;
It dries each rising tear;
It tells me, in a “still small voice,”
To trust and never fear.

Jesus, the Name I love so well,
The Name I love to hear:
No saint on earth its worth can tell,
No heart conceive how dear.

This Name shall shed its fragrance still
Along this thorny road,
Shall sweetly smooth the rugged hill
That leads me up to God.

And there with all the blood-bought throng,
From sin and sorrow free,
I’ll sing the new eternal song
Of Jesus’ love for me.

Thank you so much for posting this. These are the words I've been unable to find for the past several weeks while I've been thinking about evangelism. We need to show how beautiful our God is, not just relate facts about Him. And thanks for turning this light on Christian growth as well - delight is a far stronger motivator than anything else.
