The Sunniest Day

This is being written a little over halfway through 2019 – aka the summer (or winter, if you’re reading this in the southern hemisphere!)
The changing seasons remind us of God’s goodness; that he is with us, and in control, in all of life. The summer is typically a season of warmth and light, of sunshine and freedom. The gospel gives us these things in abundance! It’s our joy as Cor Deo (and Christians) to share and spread God’s message of hope. It’s a message that warms and transforms our cold hearts, from the inside out. And it is at the centre of everything we do.In this email, you’ll see what we’ve been doing in the last few months, and also we’ll give you some diary dates of upcoming Cor Deo opportunities.

We’re very grateful to God for Cor Deo. It’s a privilege to be supported and prayed for by you – thank you! Please don’t stop!

Report

Since we last wrote, we’ve had a great time in Cor Deo. The Women’s Intensivewas at the end of February. Peter, Mike and Gretchen were joined in Chippenham by four women for five days of sweet Bible study, discussion and application. Each day we walked through some key chapters of John’s Gospel together, and saw how Jesus comes to us in our weakness and mess. The group had many profound and impactful discussions about issues such as forgiveness, union with Christ, and suffering.
God-willing we’ll have another Women’s Intensive in 2020…check out the dates below! We also hosted our first ever John Feast. Four days, enjoying every word of John’s Gospel. It was an international group and we all agreed that being together made our hearts sing! Peter has written about the experience, and you can read it here. Here is a snippet: “We were all blown away by the wonder of the cross and the revelation of God’s heart for us.”

This year’s ELF was excellent. Along with Steve and Fraser (Cor Deo guys from Swindon), Peter and Mike led the ‘Bible Teachers and Preachers Network.’ There are two groups – ‘Foundational’ for first-timers, and ‘Advanced’ for returning participants. You can read about our sessions here and here.
The ELF is a great opportunity for us to invest in and engage with Christian leaders in Europe, and preaching is such a crucial area of transformation for our continent. As the network’s blurb says, “The church is always at its healthiest where there is a passion for the preaching of God’s Word.”
Next year, Peter is the main conference speaker! So please join us as we prepare and pray!

A few weeks ago we held our first ever John Feast. For four days we saturated our souls in John’s Gospel and it was absolutely wonderful.

Over the years we have consistently received lots of positive feedback after our normal Intensives. These four or five-day courses combine Bible study, history, theology and applied spiritual formation and ministry related subjects. One of the most consistent elements of that feedback has been how
good it has been to really invest time in the Bible study component at the start of the day. And the majority of those Intensives have been built on several key sections of John’s Gospel.

So we wondered if we could study the whole of John within a four-day course. We tried it, we called it a John Feast, and that is exactly what it was!

Each day we worked our way through a section of the Gospel using a variety of approaches to keep from methodological monotony. By the end of the week we were all blown away by the wonder of the cross and the revelation of God’s heart for us. Along the way we were continually struck by the
character and gentleness of Jesus – actually noticing some aspects of his character that I don’t remember us spotting, even when we worked through the whole Gospel over three months in the full-time program years ago. Each day we gained so much more, and yet we were always close to other texts already covered in the preceding days.

Bible study may have connotations of tedious boring mental exercise, but this was Bible feasting. We just enjoyed our God more and more as the week progressed. Yes we were tired – but it was a good tired. And yes we did also feast at lunch times, grateful to God for the food we could enjoy together and trusting God to help us stay alert in the early afternoon for what was in store there. The fellowship was special, the anticipation was tangible and we all felt that it had been a real privilege to taste John’s
Gospel in such a rich format.

So, we are planning to run another Feast later in the year. We will probably do a normal Intensive (they are such special times too), and a Feast. The only question is whether we will do John again, or choose to experience another book in this format – Mark, Hebrews, 2 Corinthians? Let us know if you are interested in attending and we will keep you in the loop when dates get confirmed!

The post Update #70 John Feast first appeared on Cor Deo.

Welcome to November! Now is officially the time for coats and heating…

Peter and I want to thank you for praying for our preparation and hosting of the mini-Intensive a few weeks ago. We had a great time. As you can see in the photo, it was a much larger group than we’d normally have, but we enjoyed being in a room full of joy and godliness! There were men and women, young and old, British and international, new believers and ‘old,’ first-timers and returners. As one participant told us, “it was an absolute treat to be with everyone!”

We hope and plan to do more mini-Intensives. It really feels like a positive and ‘easy’ opportunity to get a taste of Cor Deo, as well as quality time with Jesus in the Bible, alongside a group of believers! So here is an invitation… if you would like to host or suggest a location for a 2-day Cor Deo Intensive, do get in touch! As always, we will consider every invitation!

You can click here to email us.

We held the first Cor Deo Women’s program in February 2016, and have been thrilled to host one every year since! This year, at the end of February 2019, we will again offer a Women’s Intensive. It is a unique opportunity for women from all walks of life to spend a week together (5 days) experiencing the richness of Cor Deo! With help from our friends Gretchen and Anniina, we will explore the difference the love of God makes to being a woman, in areas such as forgiveness, mentoring and suffering.

Spaces are limited but available, so do get in touch. Email us!

This is truly a special Intensive opportunity! We’re excited to offer 4-days together in Chippenham feasting on John’s Gospel. It is always so hard to study a small selection of John highlights in an Intensive, so we thought why not spend time experiencing the whole thing? The ‘Feast’ will involve reading and studying all of John’s Gospel in a number of ways, but always letting God have the ‘loudest’ voice in the room. As with every Cor Deo opportunity, this is suitable for first-timers and ‘experienced’ Cor Deo attendees! It promises to be a significant week.

End of Winter

We’re enjoying the increased daylight here in Chippenham! We hope you are too, wherever you are in the world.
It was a full but encouraging term between Christmas and Easter, with lots of great opportunities for both Mike and Peter to preach, travel, and connect with Christians around the UK and Europe.
We’re very grateful to God for Cor Deo. It’s a privilege to be part of a ministry that, from the beginning, aims to multiply believers after God’s heart. We try the best we can to reflect our God who is a “spreading goodness” (Richard Sibbes). As supporters and friends you are a key part of this ministry – thank you!

Coming This Year

May Intensive
Join the mentors for a week-long exposure to Cor Deo training. Starting on Tuesday and ending Friday, we will have four days of intensive study and fellowship together in Chippenham, starting each day in John’s Gospel. This opportunity is ideal for those who would like to get a taste of Cor Deo’s ministry, whatever their context.

Tuesday May 1st – Friday May 4th, 9.30am – 4.30pm each day

There are still a few places available. It’s a great chance to come even if you’ve been to an Intensive before. Perhaps you can invite a friend? Email here for information or to register your interest.

October Focus
Some advance notice for you… On Friday October 19th – Saturday October 20thwe will have a mini-Intensive here in Chippenham. More details to follow soon, but get it in your diaries!

The post Update #68 Spring 2018 first appeared on Cor Deo.

End of the Year

As we come to the end of 2017, we’ve been reflecting on the year with thankfulness. The collage above gives a visual summary of some of the places we’ve been to and who we’ve been with – we are so grateful to God for the ministry He’s given us. The relationships and connections we’ve made this year are the centrepiece of Cor Deo. We’d be nothing without them!

We’ve each written a bit of a summary of our year which you can read below. But as we think back through the year, we also want to look forward – with Jesus and you – so we’d love you to keep praying with us and for us.

Who will we meet, and what will the collage look like in 12 months…?

——————————————————————————————-

I think the biggest ‘change’ for me this year has been studying on Union’s Graduate Diploma program. Each Monday since September I’ve travelled to Bristol to meet with the Learning Community, where we watch video lectures and discuss the issues and questions raised. Along with weekly reading, and essays, the structure of my week has changed lots – but it’s such a privilege! It fits so well with Cor Deo, both in terms of content and a high-view of doing life and ministry as a team.

I love student ministry and I’ve enjoyed continued links with UCCF: The Christian Unions. I’m looking forward to speaking at a CU mission events week in February!

Recently, Peter and I spent a few days in Barcelona for an ELF conference. I was receiving training in leading small discussion groups – it was a great week for lots of reasons! I’m excited to put into practice what I’ve learned at the main ELF conference in Poland in May, where I’ll be helping Peter and Huw Williams lead the ‘Bible Teachers and Preachers’ networks. It’s such an amazing opportunity and joy to pour into the lives of Christians in Europe!

————————————————————–

This year has continued the transition feel that we had last year. We were able to give up our “Unit” – the facility we used for the full-time Cor Deo programme. Mike and I have enjoyed praying and planning what Cor Deo could look like going forward. We are confident that God will continue to work through the opportunities that we are given.

It has been interesting to see how many invitations have come this year related to training preachers. I teach preaching with Union School of Theology, and in various ways with the European Leadership Forum too. Please pray for Mike and I as we make plans for these opportunities in 2018.

The majority of my ministry energy this year has been invested in Trinity Chippenham. It is a privilege to be involved in a church that is seeking to live out values that resonate so deeply with us at Cor Deo. This year has felt like a season of blessed stability and steady growth. As we come to the end of the year we are having to move to a bigger venue because of the growth we have experienced. We thank God for that!

Happy Easter!

Don’t worry – I haven’t got the calendar wrong! I know Easter weekend was last month. It’s just that shouldn’t the impact and thrill of Easter survive more than a few weeks? If you’re anything like me though, Easter can become another day in the diary. A special day for sure, perhaps even unique. But it was a number of pages ago and this week feels more pressing. Peter’s written a blog post for people just like us! We can live with hope today, in the present, because of Easter. Easter does not fade. Read the post here.

March Intensive

We had a great time at the end of March at another ‘Relational Faith’ Intensive. Our mornings in John’s Gospel were really special and gave us a clear view of Jesus. The best way to start the day! It was a fun and warm group – some had attended Cor Deo once or twice before, but for half of the group it was their first time! There was even someone who’d been a Christian for less than six months! Such a privilege.
Here are three participant reflections of our week together – we love to hear comments like these…

“This week I’ve seen that Jesus is worth getting to know more- I’m looking forward to going home and enjoying Him!”
“I’ve really appreciated the fellowship of the group.”
“The things we’ve seen this week will greatly affect my ministry.”

Do pray for the group from our March 2017 Intensive – pray that we would have a growing heart for God that will spill to our family, friends, neighbours and churches.

OM Ireland

Peter has a long relationship with Operation Mobilisation (OM) and so it was a joy to travel with him to Ireland just before Easter. We spent a few days with the OM Team based there, a team of Americans, Canadians, Dutch, Germans and others! There’s something so special about studying the Bible with people from other nations. You can see from the photo how focussed they were!
Ireland is a hard place to be an evangelical Christian and this Team work in a variety of places spreading the Good News. I was impressed and challenged by their passion and boldness for Jesus.
Pray for this Team, for our good friend Tim who heads up the training, and for the work of OM in general.

Since 2014, we’ve had a brilliant base in Chippenham which we call ‘The Unit.’ It’s been the location for our Full Time Program, Women’s Program, Intensives, Focus seminars and we’ve also found it to be a great place to study and write. However, it was clear to us and the Cor Deo trustees that the rent was becoming too much of a burden so we prayerfully decided to explore leaving The Unit. This process was completed a few weeks ago. We are so grateful to God for The Unit. We have many good memories of His blessing us there, but we’re also excited by the prospect of being ‘locationally flexible.’

Future Opportunities

A couple of Cor Deo opportunities you can sign up for. Get in touch if you’re interested in coming along!

1. As part of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther launching the Reformation with his 95 theses, we are planning a special Cor Deo ‘Reformation Intensive.’ Three days in Chippenham at the end of October with all the usual elements of Cor Deo, and a strong Luther flavour! There are more details to come, but in the meantime check your diaries and email us: Monday October 30th – Wednesday November 1st

2. Next year’s Cor Deo Womens Program will start on Monday February 26th 2018. We’re delighted to say that Gretchen will be joining us again for the three week! We’ll swim together in John’s Gospel, exploring the Four Big Questions and how they’ve been answered since the first century! If you’re a woman in Europe and have questions, or want to register your interest, let us know.

As always, me and Peter are really thankful to God for you. Thank you for your support and interest in us and Cor Deo. If there’s anything we can do to support you where you are, please let us know.

God bless.

Against the Flow

A few weeks ago in Trinity Chippenham, we started a new series in the book of Daniel. It’s been great and it’s felt so timely for me. I was challenged last Sunday about faith and how it’s defined in the 21st century West. This was one of Peter’s summary phrases: “Faith is not trust in the quantity of our belief, but rather devotion to God even over life itself.” I was struck by this in particular because I’ve seen this idea ‘lived out’ in so many of our Cor Deo Intensive participants. We want everyone who comes into contact with Cor Deo to have their “heart for God” grow and beat faster (including mine and Peter’s!) because they’ve come into contact with a good God who loves them deeply. It’s so exciting to see wide-eyes and hear gasps as brothers and sisters see Jesus jump off the pages of Scripture. Last month in the Womens’ Program we had these reactions many times! To be honest, it can be too easy to let coldness, distraction and busyness squash our faith in God. So do keep praying for Cor Deo, and for me and Peter, that devotion to our amazing God would be the motive and fruit of everything we do.

(You can listen to the Daniel messages here)

2017 Cor Deo Womens’ Program (minus Esther from Cardiff!)

February
The second Cor Deo Womens’ Program was a great success – we had a brilliant time! Six women were in the room for the three weeks, including Gretchen (Portland, USA) and Anniina (Finland and Trinity) who led and mentored the ladies. Each day started with the Bible – we travelled together through the whole of John’s Gospel. We then spent some time in church history, exploring how christianity got to where it is today in its views of God, humanity, sin and salvation. After lunch the women dug deep into the implications for the Christian life – what does it mean to be united with Christ? How do we best care for each other? Sadly there was some disruption due to illness and flu (which is why Esther is missing from the photo above.) Despite the disappointment, it was such a special time. Here are some reflections:

“Now I can see Jesus so much clearer – salvation is such a fantastic gift! I’m excited to keep on looking at Him”
“The fruit of Cor Deo is deeper freedom, joy, peace. I love Jesus more.”
“I’ve seen how good the Good News really is!”

If you’re a woman who’s interested in being part of a future Cor Deo Womens’ Program, feel free to let us know. And watch this space!

March
Coming very soon is the next Cor Deo Intensive! We’re looking forward to hearing God’s heart as we visit some highlights in John’s Gospel. We’ll spend time in church history and we’ll also consider what difference a Spirit-filled, heart-beating relationship with God makes. (Spoiler alert: it makes all the difference in the world!)

This Intensive will take place in Chippenham on Tuesday March 21st – Friday March 24th. There are still a few places available, but space is limited. If you’re interested, or know someone who might be, email us asap.

Super-Advanced ‘Warning’

God-willing there will be a fun Cor Deo opportunity in October 2017…
As part of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther launching the Reformation with his 95 theses, we are planning a special Cor Deo ‘Reformation Intensive.’ Three days in Chippenham at the end of October with all the usual elements of Cor Deo, and a strong Luther flavour! There are more details to come, but in the meantime get your diaries: Monday October 30th – Wednesday November 1st!
