I had a Sunday School teacher several years ago who asked if Jesus could have been truly tempted. As he was of one mind with the Father, He would not actually be drawn to sin. This sounds like 1st cause reasoning. To me it also speaks of the Providence of God trumping God. I have long since gotten the feeling that the Providence of God is the God behind god in "calvinist" higher criticism. On the other hand, if Jesus was in all ways tempted as are we, yet chose to do the Father's will because of His love for the Father and because of His love for humankind, then once again, I fall on my face and breathe "GLORY!"

The Amesian one is certainly more popular today --- unless of course you spend any time at all with guys who appreciate Barth or TF Torrance. In fact --- how timely --- I'm having a discussion with a guy who has just finished his Masters on Thomas' (Aquinas) concept of God (which of course is what is informing the Amesian understanding). This guy, in an articulate fashion, describes Thomas' view which exactly correlates to what you describe as the Amesian one. For anyone interested here is the thread:

With a "loveless" God, we get a "loveless" people.
